The top line gets the job done

There were more stirrings from the Kings’ top line Saturday night.

Dustin Brown fired a shot on net that trickled behind St. Louis Blues goaltender Manny Legace. Anze Kopitar scooped it up, circled behind the net and jammed in a goal during the first period.

It was the second goal by the line in as many games. Even better for the Kings, it came on the power play, the first by Kopitar or Brown this season.

“We need some offense from them right now,” Kings Coach Terry Murray said. “They haven’t generated a lot of that on a consistent basis. As far as goals, the power play needs to improve again and we need to ask our top guys to get the job done in those situations.”

Kopitar’s goal was only his second of the season and his first since Oct. 17. It came one game after Brown scored against the Florida Panthers. He has four goals this season.

A year ago, Brown scored 33 goals and Kopitar 32.

Sweating small stuff

Kings goaltender Erik Ersberg stacked his pads in practice, denying a one-timer by Alexander Frolov during Saturday’s morning skate.

Ersberg immediately looked up ice to Bill Ranford, the Kings’ goaltending coach, and nodded.

Ranford nodded back.

“He just wants me to work on small stuff,” Ersberg said. “Having my head in a particular position or holding my stick a certain way. He wants me to master the little details.”

One-timers

Derek Armstrong and Brad Richardson were healthy scratches for the Kings on Saturday. . . . St. Louis goaltender Legace, a former King, was activated from the injured reserve list and started in goal Saturday.
