Nate Davis threw for a touchdown and ran for another in a quick-strike offense, and No. 14 Ball State stayed unbeaten by wearing down Miami of Ohio for a 31-16 victory Tuesday night at Oxford, Ohio.

Ball State improved to 10-0 for the first time, with six of the wins in the Mid-American Conference. The Cardinals matched their school record for victories -- they went 10-1 in 1978. Their only perfect season came in 1949, when they won all eight games.

Miami (2-8, 1-5) hasn’t beaten a ranked team since Nov. 4, 2003, when Ben Roethlisberger led the RedHawks to an upset of Bowling Green.

A game that appeared to be a mismatch statistically stayed close until the second half, when Ball State pulled away.

McQuale Lewis had two one-yard touchdowns in the second half and finished with 165 yards, one shy of his career high.

Davis has thrown a touchdown pass in 26 of his last 27 games and has thrown only six interceptions this season.

Weis calls audible

Notre Dame Coach Charlie Weis will call the plays on offense for the Irish on Saturday against Navy.

Weis said at his news conference he was taking over the play calling for at least one game because offensive coordinator Mike Haywood will miss some practices this week to attend a funeral of a family member in Houston.

Weis would not answer reporters’ questions about how long he might continue to call plays.

Etc.

Kevin Riley will be California’s starting quarterback at No. 23 Oregon State on Saturday in a defining game for both teams’ Pacific 10 Conference hopes. . . . Minnesota wide receiver Eric Decker, a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award, will not play Saturday against Wisconsin because of an ankle injury. . . . Nebraska linebacker Cody Glenn has been suspended indefinitely from the team for violating team rules.
