Two Central Coast men were recovering after their small plane crashed on a golf course while approaching Monterey Peninsula Airport.

The single-engine two-seater struck trees and crashed Tuesday evening at the Monterey Pines Golf Course, just northwest of the airport.

Pilot Alexander Henson, 64, was able to walk away from the wreckage. His passenger, Jim Rummins, 60, was flown to a San Jose hospital, where he underwent surgery to the head and back as well as for a collapsed lung.

Henson’s wife, Holly, said the injuries to both men were not life-threatening.

She said her husband and Rummins were returning from a 10-day vacation to the Gulf of California when they ran into trouble during the landing process.
