‘Pacman’ Jones gets indefinite suspension

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones has been suspended indefinitely without pay by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for his latest violation of the league’s personal-conduct policy.

Jones, who was suspended for the entire 2007 season, was involved in an alcohol-related altercation last week with a bodyguard who had been hired by the Cowboys to keep him out of trouble. Jones has a long history of run-ins with the law.

In a letter delivered to Jones on Tuesday, Goodell called the latest confrontation “a disturbing pattern of behavior and clearly inconsistent with the conditions I set for your continued participation in the NFL.”

Jones will sit out at least the next four games, and Goodell will determine the final length of the suspension after the Cowboys’ Nov. 16 game at Washington.

According to the league, whether Jones can return will be based on his “strict compliance” with the treatment plans of the NFL and the Cowboys. Also, the league has retained clinical experts who will provide Goodell with evaluations of Jones’ progress.

Roy Williams headed home to Texas in the NFL’s biggest trade before the deadline, giving the struggling Cowboys another proven receiver opposite Terrell Owens.

The winless Detroit Lions traded their unhappy 2004 first-round pick and one-time Pro Bowler for three draft picks, from the first, third and sixth round in 2009.

Detroit also gave the Cowboys a seventh-rounder next year.

“I’m more happy to be a Dallas Cowboy than when I got my first bike,” said Williams, an Odessa native who starred at the University of Texas.

Running back Shaun Alexander, the most valuable player with Seattle in 2005, signed with the Washington Redskins.

Alexander, who was cut by the Seahawks in April, signed a one-year deal to back up NFL leading rusher Clinton Portis.

The Lions put quarterback Jon Kitna on injured reserve, ending his season.

Kitna suffered a back injury in a loss to Chicago two weeks ago. He did not play last week against Minnesota.

Larry Johnson was charged with pushing a woman at a Kansas City nightclub in February, the third time the Chiefs’ running back has been charged with assaulting a woman.
