Re “Army grants a stay to desert tortoises,” Oct. 11

I read with some bemusement your article regarding the Army’s curtailment of moving desert tortoises because coyotes turned the plan into a meal opportunity.

I recall a similar effort by the Bureau of Land Management and a developer just outside of Las Vegas. Concrete block structures were erected to house relocated tortoises so that the developer could proceed with development plans for the area.

A local took me out to the site. We saw hundreds of ravens lining the block walls. The ravens would turn the tortoises over and feast away.

I’m assuming the movement of tortoises outside of Barstow was an equally well-thought-out plan.
