Rookie Turnesa leads by one in Las Vegas

Marc Turnesa topped the leaderboard for the third straight day in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, shooting a three-under 69 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead over three players.

The PGA Tour rookie had a 21-under total of 195 at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. He opened with rounds of 62 and 64. Chris DiMarco (63), Michael Allen (64) and Ken Duke (67) were tied for second.

Matt Kuchar was tied for the lead with Turnesa with a hole to play, but closed with a double bogey for a 71. He was two strokes back at 19 under along with Zach Johnson (70) and Chris Stroud (67).

DiMarco eagled Nos. 9 and 16 and added six birdies. He played the last six holes in six under for his best round since a 62 in the 2003 Phoenix Open. After finishing in the top 30 on the money list from 1999 to 2005, he has missed 15 cuts in 26 events this year and is 143rd on the money list with $474,314.

“It’s nice to be back in the hunt,” DiMarco said.

Johnson, who won the Texas Open last week, has made only seven bogeys in his last seven rounds, but two of them came in the third round.

Morgan Pressel moved into position for her first LPGA Tour victory of the year, shooting a five-under 67 for a share of the third-round lead in the Kapalua LPGA Classic in Hawaii.

The 20-year-old Pressel, Kapalua’s touring pro, was tied with Brittany Lang (71), Carin Koch (68) and Jee Young Lee (70) at five-under 211.

Pressel missed an easy opportunity to move to six under for the outright lead when she lipped out a two-foot birdie putt on the final hole. She threw her putter onto her bag in disgust as she walked off the green.

“It’s hard to walk off the last hole like that,” Pressel said. “I just missed it. Nothing else to say about that.”

Sun Young Yoo, Laura Diaz and Il Mi Chung shot 71s and were one stroke off the lead along with first-round leader Suzann Pettersen (72). Heather Young (67), Cristie Kerr (70) and Alena Sharp (72) were three under.

Conditions at the hilly, pine tree-lined Bay Course were windy, causing problems around the greens. However, the trades were not as strong as the two previous rounds, allowing for more birdie chances.

Pressel, who hasn’t finished in the top 10 since June, began the day at even par and ran into trouble in the middle of her round with bogeys on Nos. 9 and 10, but got right back on track by birdieing No. 11.

Koch, winless since the 2005 Corona Morelia Championship, birdied three of her final four holes.

Bernhard Langer shot a five-under 67 and was tied for the lead after the second round of the Administaff Small Business Classic in The Woodlands, Texas.

Langer, Lonnie Nielsen and Brad Bryant all were at nine under for the tournament, one better than Denis Watson. Nielsen and Bryant both had 68s and Watson tied Fred Funk for the day’s best round with a 66.

Langer, the defending champion, had five birdies and no bogeys. He finished at 25 under to win last year’s tournament at Augusta Pines by eight shots. Funk was tied with eight others at six under.
