A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who was attacked by a motorist near the scene of a fatal accident was forced to draw her weapon and shoot the man, authorities said.

The deputy, whose name had not been released, responded with another deputy to a call of a fatal accident at 124th Street and Compton Avenue about 1:50 p.m.

While one deputy attended to the injured motorist, who later died, the other ran after the suspect.

When she caught up with him, about 200 feet away, she was “verbally and physically assaulted by the suspect believed to have caused the accident,” said sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore.

“She was struck numerous times by the suspect,” Whitmore said. “The deputy, fearing for her life, pulled out her service weapon and fired.”

The suspect, who was not identified, was listed in critical condition at a hospital with at least one gunshot wound, Whitmore said.
