Rudy Carpenter threw for 345 yards and three touchdowns Saturday night to lead No. 15 Arizona State to a 41-17 victory over Stanford in Tempe, Ariz.

Facing relentless pressure on a 100-degree night in the desert, Carpenter completed 27 of 36 passes and had a pass intercepted. He was sacked twice and fumbled once. Carpenter has thrown for a school-record 733 yards in the first two games.

The Sun Devils, 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Pacific 10 Conference, won the last two meetings with Stanford by a combined score of 79-6, but this one was tighter, at least for three quarters.

Toby Gerhart’s five-yard run gave Stanford (1-1, 1-1) a 7-3 lead after one quarter. Gerhart finished with 67 yards and two touchdowns.

The second quarter belonged to Arizona State.

With 9:08 to go in the half, Carpenter hit a wide-open Michael Jones with an 11-yard touchdown pass to put the Sun Devils ahead, 13-7.

California 66, Washington State 3 -- Jahvid Best ran for 200 yards and three touchdowns as the Bears (2-0, 1-0) blasted the Cougars (0-2, 0-1) at Pullman, Wash., to spoil the home debut for Coach Paul Wuff, a star player for Washington State in the late 1980s.

Best carried the ball 14 times in his first career start and California produced 505 yards for its most lopsided victory over Washington State in the 69-game series, topping a 61-0 win in 1922.

Best had touchdown runs of 80 and 86 yards and the Bears finished with 391 yards rushing.

Washington State had only 167 yards of offense, and barely preserved its string of scoring in 275 consecutive games, the second-longest streak in the nation after Michigan’s 300 straight.
