ATP clears Davydenko in betting case

Russian tennis star Nikolay Davydenko was cleared by the ATP on Friday after a yearlong investigation into suspicious betting patterns on a match he lost to a low-ranked opponent.

The governing body of men’s tennis said it found no evidence of wrongdoing by Davydenko, opponent Martin Vassallo Arguello of Argentina or anyone else associated with their match in Sopot, Poland, on Aug. 2, 2007.

“The ATP has now exhausted all avenues of inquiry open to it and the investigation is now concluded,” the ATP said in a statement.

Hornaday OK to race after admitting testosterone use

Ron Hornaday, the defending champion in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, will be allowed to race after disclosing he used a testosterone cream because it wasn’t intended as a performance enhancer, NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter said.

Hornaday told ESPN the Magazine this week that he used a testosterone cream during 2004 and 2005 to treat a medical issue. Hornaday also revealed he has Graves’ disease, a condition he is now treating with Synthroid, which replaces a hormone normally produced by the thyroid gland to regulate the body’s metabolism.

Rain washed out NASCAR Sprint Cup qualifying at Loudon, N.H. However, 18-year-old Joey Logano is guaranteed a starting spot in the 43-car field for Sunday’s Sylvania 300.

A week ago at Richmond, Va., a rainout left Logano out of the lineup because he was entered in a fourth Joe Gibbs Racing car that had no owner points. This week, Logano is entered in the No. 96 Hall of Fame Racing entry, 39th in the owners points.

Report states Young had talked of suicide

The Tennessee Titans called police Monday night for help searching for Vince Young because his therapist told Coach Jeff Fisher the quarterback mentioned suicide several times before driving away from his home with a gun, according to a supplemental report filed Tuesday by Nashville police.

The report, obtained by Nashville’s City Paper through a public records request, noted that Fisher was worried about Young after the call from Young’s therapist.

“I asked him, ‘What made her worry about him?’ ” Lt. Andrea Swisher wrote. “He stated, ‘His mood, his emotions, he wants to quit, and he mentioned suicide several times.’ ”

Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Troy Williamson missed his third consecutive practice and was ruled out of the team’s home opener against Buffalo.

Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall pleaded guilty to a reduced charge in a drunk-driving case and was sentenced to a year of probation.

Jefferson, formerly of USC, to play in Israel

Former USC forward Davon Jefferson has signed with the Maccabi Haifa Heat of the Israeli Premier League. Jefferson, who averaged 12.1 points for the Trojans as a freshman last season, declared for the NBA draft, but wasn’t selected.

The Cleveland Cavaliers signed restricted free agent guard Delonte West to a two-year contract, a deal that includes a third-year club option for 2011-12. Financial terms were not immediately known.

Portland Trail Blazers center Raef LaFrentz will have shoulder surgery this month.

Eaks’ 61 puts him atop Champions tournament

Defending champion R.W. Eaks shot an 11-under 61 in the Greater Hickory Classic at Conover, N.C., missing a chance for the first 59 in Champions Tour history when he parred the final three holes.

After making nine birdies and an eagle to reach 11 under after 15 holes, the 56-year-old Eaks had good birdie chances on the final two holes but missed a five-foot putt on No. 16, a 13-footer on 17 and a 10-footer on 18.

Cristie Kerr shot a six-under 66 in wind gusting to 35 mph to take a two-stroke second-round lead over Angela Stanford in the Bell Micro LPGA Classic at Mobile Ala.

East Carolina fined for football fans’ actions

East Carolina is being fined $10,000 by Conference USA after its football fans charged the field to celebrate the Pirates’ upset of West Virginia last weekend.

USA Taekwondo filed a protest with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, seeking changes in the sport’s judging protocols in the wake of Steven Lopez’s disputed quarterfinal loss in the Beijing Olympics.

The federation’s chief executive, David Askinas, said the appeal was designed to shine a light on “the internal problems in our sport.”

Columbus Blue Jackets 18-year-old top draft choice Nikita Filatov will miss the team’s rookie camp this weekend because of a lower leg injury.
