Police arrested a 22-year-old driver who fled after fatally striking a bicyclist Sunday in Echo Park, authorities said.

Alejandro Hidalgo of Panorama City was driving south on Glendale Boulevard about 1:45 a.m. when he hit a 44-year-old man riding a bicycle in the same lane, said Officer Christine Eastburn of the Los Angeles Police Department.

A witness wrote down the car’s license plate number, and Hidalgo was arrested at his home two hours later. He was booked on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter.

“Based upon the physical evidence left at the scene and the statement from his passenger, it was determined that Mr. Hidalgo was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage at the time of the collision,” Eastburn said. The victim, an L.A. resident, died at the scene. His identity was not released.
