Re “Police chief’s exit poses a major challenge for L.A.,” Aug. 6

Chief William J. Bratton’s service was the best thing that ever happened to the Los Angeles Police Department. The department motto, “to protect and to serve,” came closer to fulfillment for all Angelenos during his tenure than at any other time in the department’s history. He will be missed.

I am sad to see that Bratton will return to New York. I was hoping he would stay in California and run for mayor of Los Angeles or governor. We could use some East Coast perspective.

Bratton played the city like a chump. How is it that he is now joining the very firm that played a part in overseeing the LAPD’s federal consent decree? How is it that the decree was lifted just before the chief was recruited by the same oversight team that was mandated to carry out the decree? This is naked conflict of interest, and all the parties to this cabal know it.

Just like former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Bratton is a careerist, and L.A. can keep its murderous skid row, its unfinished police center, its untamed street gangs and its phony crime-statistics map. New York, here he comes, tanned, rested and pockets loaded with golden shekels.
