The group that hands out the Academy Awards got a new boss this week, and he was promptly asked about speculation that the Oscar ceremony might kick out the less glamorous awards to make room for more entertainment segments.
“Trust me. It won’t change,” said Tom Sherak, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. “I don’t think you’ll ever see the awards cut on Academy Awards night. Every one of those categories, to this organization, is very important. It makes up who we are.”
But as previously announced, the Oscars will be different next year: There will be 10 nominees for best picture. Sherak, an executive who has worked in the movie business for more than 40 years, was asked, if the expansion of that category is determined to be successful, will the Oscars expand other races too?
“I don’t see that happening,” he responded.
