2 storm systems on the way to Southern California
Two storm systems will begin moving into the region today and Friday, producing heavy rain and snow at times in Southern California, the National Weather Service said.
The first storm system is expected to hit tonight, but it will be the weakest of the two, producing about half an inch of rainfall, said weather specialist Stuart Seto.
Snow levels in the local mountains will be between 5,500 and 6,000 feet, with 2 to 4 inches of snowfall, he said.
The storm is expected to taper off by Friday afternoon, Seto said.
The second, more potent storm will roll over the region Friday night, dropping at least an inch and a half of rainfall over coastal areas, and more than 2 inches in the foothills and mountains, posing a significant risk of mudslides in areas burned by the recent wildfires.
Forecasters also have issued a high-surf advisory for most Southern California beaches because of a storm that passed through the Hawaiian Islands this week. The advisory is set to expire early Friday morning, officials said.
