John Wooden recovering from pneumonia

John Wooden is recovering from pneumonia, and the 98-year-old basketball coaching great is expected to be released from the hospital soon.

UCLA, the school Wooden coached to 10 national titles, said Friday he was admitted to a Los Angeles-area hospital Feb. 13 and is completing his recovery.

“My father is doing well,” said Nan Muehlhausen, Wooden’s daughter. “His lungs are clear and he has been eating well. We expect him to be released soon.”

His family requested that well-wishers not call or visit so he can get rest.

Wooden, who retired 34 years ago, spent time in the hospital a year ago after breaking his left wrist and collarbone in a fall at his suburban condo.

Djokovic in Dubai final

Top-seeded Novak Djokovic advanced to the final of the Dubai Championship in United Arab Emirates, rallying to beat third-seeded Gilles Simon, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.

The third-ranked Serbian reached his first final of the season and will play David Ferrer, who beat Richard Gasquet, 6-2, 6-2 in the other semifinal.

Seventh-seeded Jeremy Chardy advanced to his second semifinal of the year with a 7-6 (7), 7-6 (3) win over Marcos Baghdatis at the Delray Beach International Championship in Florida.

In another quarterfinal, Christophe Rochus beat 2000 Delray Beach champion Stefan Koubek, 6-3, 7-6 (6). In the semifinals, Rochus will play qualifier Evgeny Korolev, who defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, 6-2, 6-2.

Jaguars’ Williams arrested

Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Reggie Williams was charged with driving while intoxicated and possession of marijuana after being arrested during a traffic stop early Friday.

Houston police department spokesman John Cannon said the 25-year-old Williams was arrested about 2 a.m. on Houston’s southwest side after officers smelled alcohol on his breath and a “strong odor” of marijuana in his vehicle. A search of the vehicle found a small amount of marijuana in its console, Cannon said.

Both charges are Class B misdemeanors and carry maximum sentences of six months in jail.

Former elite cyclist Tammy Thomas has asked for a new trial because of a newly disclosed report about the government’s top sports doping investigator.

Thomas was convicted last year of lying to a grand jury when she denied using steroids.

On Friday, her attorney, Ethan Balogh, told a judge the cyclist deserved a new trial because prosecutors failed to turn over the complete report that cleared IRS agent Jeff Novitzky and several other agents of being responsible for $600 in money missing from the more than $60,000 seized in the September 2003 raid of the apartment of Greg Anderson, Barry Bonds’ personal trainer.

Balogh complained he wasn’t given the part of the report discussing allegations that Novitzky planned to write a book about doping in sports.

A former Olympic shotputter is the latest female coach to sue Fresno State University.

Ramona Pagel, who holds the American record in the shotput, is suing for gender discrimination and Title IX retaliation.

Pagel’s suit filed last week in Fresno Superior Court alleges she was denied a chance to interview for the track head coaching job, then wasn’t offered an interview to keep her assistant coaching position. Pagel is a four-time Olympian.

The school has paid out more than $16 million in discrimination disputes since 2007 to five current and former female employees of the athletic department. The most noteworthy was a $9-million payment to former basketball coach Stacy Johnson-Klein.

Vonn third in downhill

Fabienne Suter of Switzerland won a World Cup downhill in Bansko, Bulgaria. Overall leader Lindsey Vonn of the United States tied for third.

Suter won the race in 1 minute 45.68 seconds. Andrea Fischbacher of Austria was 1.15 seconds behind, and Vonn tied with Nadia Fanchini of Italy, 1.24 back.

Vonn extend her lead in the overall standings to 346 points over Maria Riesch of Germany. She also leads the downhill standings by 118 points.

Shane Mosley wants to face the winner of the upcoming Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton fight before taking a rematch with Miguel Cotto.

Mosley, 37, is weighing his options after beating Antonio Margarito to win the WBA welterweight title on Jan. 24 in Los Angeles. Pacquiao and Hatton will meet in Las Vegas on May 2 for Hatton’s IBO junior-welterweight belt.

Ex-USC player was 49

Arthur Hemingway, who was paralyzed after being hit by a car during football camp in his freshman season of 1978, died Thursday in Oceanside. He was 49.

The cause of death has not been determined.
