An Amtrak train carrying 400 passengers and bound for San Diego struck and killed a woman walking inside a railroad tunnel just west of the Chatsworth station Sunday, authorities said.
The incident was reported just before 4 p.m. No train passengers were injured, but they were held on board for two hours and 40 minutes pending an investigation, said Amtrak spokesman Clifford Cole.
Authorities said the train, Pacific Surfliner 784, originating from San Francisco, was approaching the Chatsworth station.
The woman was identified by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office as Myra Mina-Calove, 32, of Woodland Hills.
She was killed instantly when she was struck by a grab bar protruding from the side of a train car, said Los Angeles Police Officer Karen Smith. She had been hiking and was walking with her husband, two sisters and a friend, who managed to squeeze against the tunnel wall and avoid being hit, according to authorities.
