She knows how to pick and roll

Share

For someone who’s just 22, Candace Parker of the L.A. Sparks pro basketball team has been collecting accolades at a furious pace. College national championship? Check. Olympic gold medal? Check. League MVP and rookie of the year in the same WNBA season? Double-check.

What worlds are left to conquer? Perhaps Madison Avenue. On Sunday, Adidas is rolling out a massive ad campaign and contest with the 6-foot-4 Parker as point person. It’s called “Me, Myself,” and unless you live in a cave, you’ll soon be hearing all the details on how to take part.

There’s one more project worth mentioning: Parker and husband Shelden Williams (of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings) will soon welcome their first child into the world, or more specifically, Marina del Rey. That kid’s going to be some ballplayer.

Serious sushi

My husband and I are sushi fanatics, and we’ve found a place in Brentwood called Katsuya that has the best we’ve ever had. We go in and order roll after roll -- crab, spicy tuna, everything. It’s not that dressy if you go earlier in the evening; I can go with nice jeans and a cute top. Whenever we have people come in from out of town, that’s where I take them.

Soul food for comfort

I’m big on soul food. My mom used to cook it all the time while I was growing up in the Chicago area, and then when I went off to college down in Knoxville, Tenn., I was able to get a lot of good Southern soul food. Once I moved here, I just started eating a lot of sushi. No, I’m kidding, there’s good soul food here too, like M&M; on Centinela. It’s fantastic, especially the pork chops and catfish. Whenever I’m done with practice and need some comfort food, I’ll go there. It’s a very laid-back place.

Roscoe’s House of Chicken ‘N Waffles on Pico off La Brea is really good too. I like the drink called the Sunset, which is lemonade and fruit punch; it’s the best drink you’ll ever have.

Mall shopper

For shopping, I’m still just getting used to L.A., but I love the Ed Hardy shops, so I’m always heading over to the ones at the Beverly Center and the Sherman Oaks Galleria. I like the shirts and the vintage clothing. I’m also a Nordstrom person.

Stepping out in 90210

If you want the Hollywood scene, Mr. Chow in Beverly Hills is the place. Every night there are actors and paparazzi there; I think there were some people from “The Hills” the last time I had dinner. I enjoy a little bit of that kind of scene every once in a while, but myself, I’m basically a really private person.

Latest films, biggest screens

When I go to the movies, I like the cutting-edge, state-of-the-art type places more than the old Hollywood theaters. I like the bigger new screens and the stadium seating, all the creature comforts. My favorite is the Bridge: Cinema de Lux. It’s nice inside, it’s close to my house and there’s a lot of good shopping around there too.
