UCLA’s Holiday signs with the 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers have signed first-round draft pick Jrue Holiday.

Holiday, 6 feet 3 and 180 pounds, was the 17th overall pick in the NBA draft after leaving UCLA after his freshman season.

He averaged 8.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists with the Bruins. Holiday should expect to see instant playing time with the 76ers, who are unlikely to re-sign starting point guard Andre Miller. Miller is an unrestricted free agent.

Free-agent forward Sean May agreed in principle to a one-year contract with the Sacramento Kings, hoping for a fresh start for a career that has been derailed by injuries. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. . . . Free-agent forward Matt Barnes has agreed to a two-year contract with the Orlando Magic.

Former Memphis Grizzlies and University of Memphis point guard Antonio Burks remains in critical condition a day after being shot during a robbery. A spokeswoman for Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn., said there was no change in the medical condition of Burks, who underwent surgery Monday night after he was shot in the lower torso.

Mike Krzyzewski will coach the United States in next summer’s world championships and when it defends its gold medal in the 2012 Olympics, USA Basketball announced.

Roethlisberger accused of assault

A woman has filed a civil lawsuit claiming Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger sexually assaulted her in his hotel room last July when he was in Lake Tahoe for a celebrity golf tournament. The complaint also names eight Harrah’s Lake Tahoe employees accused of participating in a cover-up to protect Roethlisberger.

In denying the accusations, Roethlisberger’s attorney pointed out the woman never went to the authorities.

“The timing of the lawsuit and the absence of a criminal complaint and a criminal investigation are the most compelling evidence of the absence of any criminal conduct,” David Cornwell said in a statement. “If an investigation is commenced, Ben will cooperate fully and Ben will be fully exonerated.”

The woman was an executive casino host at the time of the alleged incident and worked as a concierge for the American Century Celebrity golf tournament. She is seeking a minimum of $440,000 in damages from Roethlisberger, at least $50,000 in damages from the Harrah’s officials, and an unspecified amount of punitive damages.

Qualifiers pull off first-round upsets

Second-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues was ousted by qualifier Vesna Manasieva, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5, in the first round of the Slovenia Open in Portoroz. Also advancing was qualifier Ksenia Pervak, who overcame Julia Georges, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, and will next play Dinara Safina. . . . Top-seeded Gilles Simon was eliminated from the German Open in Hamburg, losing to wild card Daniel Brands, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the second round.

ESPN’s Andrews tape is confirmed

ESPN reporter Erin Andrews was secretly videotaped in the nude while she was alone in a hotel room, and the video was posted on the Internet, her attorney said.

The blurry, five-minute video shows Andrews standing in front of a hotel room mirror. It’s unknown when or where it was shot.

Andrews’ attorney, Marshall Grossman, confirmed Tuesday that the video posted on the Internet shows the 31-year-old reporter. He said she decided to confirm it “to put an end to rumor and speculation and to put the perpetrator and those who are complicit on notice that they act at their peril.”

Penn State drops backup receiver

Penn State backup receiver James McDonald is off the football team after police charged him with drunk driving. A one-sentence statement from the athletic department said the fifth-year senior would not be invited back to the Nittany Lions in the fall.

The Edmonton Oilers re-signed defenseman Denis Grebeshkov to a one-year contract. The 25-year-old had seven goals, 32 assists and 38 penalty minutes in 72 games last season. . . . Tampa Bay and Phoenix have completed a trade sending right wing Radim Vrbata to the Coyotes for left wing Todd Fedoruk and defenseman David Hale. . . .
