Klitschko wins by TKO before 61,000

Wladimir Klitschko again proved his dominance of the heavyweight division, stopping Ruslan Chagaev in a hastily put-together title fight Saturday night in front of 61,000 at a soccer stadium in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

The IBF and WBO champion added the Ring Magazine belt to his haul, knocking Chagaev down in the second round and opening a cut over the Uzbek-born fighter’s left eye in the eighth.

Referee Eddie Cotton stopped the fight before the 10th round.

Chagaev, who is the WBA’s “champion in recess,” raised a deep bruise under Klitschko’s right eye, but was done in by the Ukrainian’s height advantage and superior power. With his strong left jab and hard straight rights, Klitschko (53-3, 47 KOs) bloodied Chagaev and never appeared in danger.

The sellout crowd was the biggest boxing audience in Germany since Max Schmeling knocked out Adolf Heuser in front of 70,000 in Stuttgart in 1939.

Castroneves gets IRL pole in Iowa

With an assist from Will Power and some water that had seeped onto the track, Helio Castroneves was awarded the pole for today’s Iowa Corn Indy 250 in Newton.

Qualifying was first delayed and then canceled, so the Iowa 250 field will be stacked based on entrant points.

Ryan Briscoe, also from Team Penske, will start second. Target Chip Ganassi teammates Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti will start third and fourth followed by Danica Patrick.

Though it hadn’t rained Saturday before qualifying, heavy thunderstorms swept through central Iowa on Friday. Qualifying was held up for about 75 minutes as officials worked to clear water on the backstretch. The session eventually got underway, but only three drivers were able to run before it was called off.

Carl Edwards made the most of his one-day Wisconsin getaway, winning the Nationwide Series race at the Milwaukee Mile in West Allis after taking a brief break from his Sprint Cup duties in Sonoma, Calif.

It’s a repeat victory at Milwaukee and the first Nationwide win of this season for Edwards, who took the lead from fellow Cup commuter Kyle Busch with 44 laps left and wasn’t significantly challenged the rest of the way.

Busch finished second, followed by Brad Keselowski.

Ron Hornaday Jr. celebrated his 51st birthday in style with a dominating victory in the NASCAR Camping World Truck series race at the Milwaukee Mile.

It was the 41st trucks series victory of his career and second win of the season for Hornaday -- and his second victory in a trucks race at Milwaukee, where he also won in 1997.

Dennis Setzer finished second, followed by Brian Scott. The race originally was scheduled for Friday night, but heavy rains forced officials to postpone it until Saturday afternoon.

Sebastian Vettel won the pole for the British Grand Prix in Silverstone, England.

Division points leader Nick Joanides of Woodland Hills swept the NASCAR ACDelco Super Late Model twin 40-lap feature races at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale.

In both races Joanides held off challenges by Rip Michels and extended his win streak to four.

Wozniacki wins Eastbourne title

Caroline Wozniacki won the Aegon International title, defeating unseeded Virginie Razzano, 7-6, 7-5, in Eastbourne, England.

Qualifier Benjamin Becker won his first ATP title, beating wild card Raemon Sluiter, 7-5, 6-3, at the Ordina Open in Den Bosch, Netherlands.

Earlier, Tamarine Tanasugarn became the first player to successfully defend the Ordina Open women’s title by defeating Yanina Wickmayer, 6-3, 7-5.

Molsons set to buy Canadiens

The Molson family is poised to buy back the Montreal Canadiens.

Team owner George Gillett and Geoff Molson issued a joint statement saying they have an agreement in principle for three Molson brothers to purchase the club.

The deal needs approval from the NHL’s board of governors, which they expect to get by late August.

Phelps is fast in 100 butterfly

Michael Phelps swam a personal-best time of 50.48 seconds in winning the 100-meter butterfly at the Canada Cup in Montreal, flirting with the world record set four years ago by American Ian Crocker.

Phelps, tuning up for the U.S. championships in the pool used at the 1976 Olympics, improved on his best of 50.58 set in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Iowa offensive lineman Kyle Calloway has been arrested and charged with operating a moped while intoxicated in Des Moines.

Police say the 22-year-old senior was given a breath test, which registered 0.106. The legal limit in Iowa is 0.08.

Calloway has started 25 straight games for Iowa.
