Seven weeks ago, the Sol endured its only loss of the season. It could be another seven before it is similarly challenged.

Until then the Sol is collecting wins comfortably, Sunday’s 2-0 victory over FC Gold Pride being the latest example as it remains atop the Women’s Professional Soccer standings.

The Sol (8-1-4) used goals by Camille Abily and Marta in the first half to increase its first-place lead in front of an announced crowd of 4,593 at Home Depot Center.

Gold Pride (3-6-3), which has failed to get a win in its last five games, was the 10th opponent this year unable to score against the Sol.

After receiving a right-side corner kick from Aya Miyama, Martina Franko directed the bouncing ball in deep toward Abily, who guided it into the corner of the goal in the 17th minute for her league-leading seventh goal.

In the 25th minute, Shannon Boxx delivered a long assist to Marta, who dribbled close to the left side of the field, and shot a left-footed goal past Gold Pride goaltender Nicole Barnhart.

Marta, who is fourth in the league in scoring, posted her fifth goal of the year.

The Sol remains unbeaten in its last eight matches and will travel to St. Louis to face Athletica on Wednesday.
