UCLA surprises No. 4 Cal

Erica Tukiainen scored 18 of her career-high 25 points in the second half to lead UCLA over No. 4 California, 71-56, Sunday in a Pacific 10 Conference game at Pauley Pavilion.

“Coach told us we needed an extra spark,” said Tukiainen, who made 11 of 16 shots. “I was in the zone and we got it done.”

The Bruins, 17-10 overall and 8-8 in the Pac-10, also made two pivotal three-point shots, one by Christina Nzekwe with 5:55 left and another by Tukiainen with 5:20 left, to take the lead for good at 54-49.

Cal (23-4, 14-2) played the second half without sophomore Alexis Gray-Lawson, who went out because of a sprained left knee late in the first half.

No. 3 Stanford 85, USC 74 -- The Cardinal used a 16-point edge in inside scoring to defeat the Trojans (14-13, 8-8) at the Galen Center and take sole possession of first place in the Pac-10. Stanford (24-4, 15-1) led by only two, at 47-45, when it went on a 10-1 run fueled by Kayla Pedersen, who finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Camille LeNoir scored 12 of her 17 points in the second half and had nine assists for USC.
