Kyle Busch drives to victory at Bristol

Kyle Busch led 378 of 503 laps Sunday to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee, his second victory this season.

“This place probably owes me a few,” said Busch, who has had bad luck at the track. “But you can never ask a racetrack to pay you back. You just have to just keep working on it.”

Busch was untouchable in his Toyota, even to teammate Denny Hamlin, who followed him across the finish line.

“Man, it’s great to get a 1-2,” Hamlin said of the Joe Gibbs Racing dominance.

Defending three-time series champion Jimmie Johnson was third in a Chevrolet to tie his career-best finish at Bristol, in 2004.

“What a day for us. I wish we had 500 more laps to go,” Johnson said.

Jeff Gordon, Johnson’s teammate at Hendrick Motorsports, was fourth.

A Busch brother has won the last three races. Kyle won at Las Vegas this month and Kurt followed it with a victory at Atlanta. Kurt, a five-time Bristol winner, finished 11th Sunday.

Travis Kvapil finished 18th in his final race for Yates Racing. The No. 28 team will suspend operations today because of a lack of sponsorship. Several teams were forced to quit last season for the same reason.

Max Jones, the team’s general manager, did not rule out reviving the race team if funding comes through.

Bobby Labonte and Paul Menard also drive for Yates Racing but have full sponsorship.

Six-time superbike champion Mat Mladin won Sunday’s race in the Suzuki AMA Pro Superbike Challenge at Auto Club Speedway, giving him a weekend sweep and the eighth win of his career at the Fontana track.

His Suzuki teammate, Tommy Hayden, was second.

In the event’s Sportbike class, Danny Esklick also won both weekend races on a Buell motorcycle.

Floyd, White Sox agree to deal

Right-hander Gavin Floyd and the Chicago White Sox agreed to a $15.5-million, four-year contract, a deal that includes a $9.5-million club option for 2013.

Floyd, 26, was 17-8 with a 3.84 earned-run average for the White Sox last year and is 25-18 in 73 games over parts of five big league seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies and White Sox.

Floyd was to receive $520,000 this season under a one-year deal agreed to Feb. 25.

Oakland Athletics Manager Bob Geren is close to striking a deal with the club for a contract extension, said David Forst, the team’s assistant general manager.

Geren, 47, refused to comment on the negotiations. He is 151-172 with the A’s in his only two years as a major league manager.

Goosen picks up elusive victory

Retief Goosen closed with a one-under-par 70 for a one-shot victory in the Transitions Championship at Palm Harbor, Fla., his first PGA Tour win in nearly four years.

Charles Howell III shot a 69 to finish tied for second with Brett Quigley, who closed with a 68 for his second runner-up finish in as many weeks.

Pat Hurst shot a four-under 68 to beat Lorena Ochoa and Yani Tseng by one stroke in the Mastercard Classic at Huixquilucan, Mexico.

Raiders’ Green is arrested in Florida

Oakland Raiders tackle Cornell Green was arrested Saturday in Tampa, Fla., and was being held in jail on a domestic violence charge stemming from an argument with the mother of his two children, police said. . . . Belmont Cat, ridden by Joel Rosario, beat out Bel Air Sizzle, with Rafael Bejarano aboard, by a head to win the Grade II $150,000 Santa Ana Handicap. . . . UCLA won the Pacific 10 Conference women’s gymnastics championship Saturday at Stanford. The Bruins had 196.725 points to earn their 14th Pac-10 title.
