CALIFORNIA BRIEFING / SAN DIEGO
A former CHP officer was charged Tuesday with accepting a sexual bribe from a woman in exchange for dismissing a speeding ticket. Abram Carabajal, 51, resigned during the investigation.
Carabajal, who regularly patrolled Interstate 5 in the San Onofre area, spent 26 years with the California Highway Patrol. He allegedly persuaded a judge to dismiss the speeding ticket he wrote March 12 of last year. He and Shirin Zarrindej, 48, an animal groomer from Encino, met at an Oceanside motel shortly after the ticket was dismissed, officials said.
Carabajal was charged in San Diego County Superior Court with felony counts of perjury, bribery and obstructing justice. Zarrindej will be arraigned next week on felony bribery charges, officials said.
