U.S. agents seize 640 pounds of pot on boat

Federal agents seized about 640 pounds of marijuana Saturday afternoon on a private shipping boat four nautical miles west of San Diego’s Mission Bay, officials said. Two U.S. citizens onboard, both men in their 20s, were arrested on suspicion of smuggling, but their identities were not immediately released.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted the 27-foot-long boat, which appeared to be coming from Mexico with the drugs, said Vince Bond, a spokesman for the agency. Though it was not a record marijuana seizure, Bond described it as a substantial haul.

“Any time you can get 640 pounds of narcotics is a very good day for Customs and Border Protection,” he said.

Unlike some other cases of alleged drug vessels coming from Mexico, no undocumented immigrants were aboard the boat seized Saturday, Bond said. Officials were investigating the vessel’s route.
