Pena’s 12th homer gives Rays a win

Carlos Pena homered leading off the 10th inning, and the Tampa Bay Rays survived a sudden downpour and Mark Teixeira’s late, tying double to beat the New York Yankees, 4-3, on Wednesday night.

Pena was hitless in his first three at-bats before hitting his major league-leading 12th homer, driving a 1-and-0 pitch from Phil Coke (1-2) just over the right-field wall and sending the Yankees to their fourth straight loss.

The Rays’ Carl Crawford stole a base, joining Bert Campaneris, Rickey Henderson and Corey Patterson as the only players since 1954 to steal a base in nine straight games.

Only a few thousand fans were left to see the end after a 28-minute rain delay sent most of an already meager crowd home in the eighth inning.
