Careful with those carts

Re “Baggage box sucked into jetliner engine,” May 12

Although only a baggage container was sucked into the jet engine in the incident at LAX, the airport as well as the airlines should see this as a warning.

The exposed jet engine serves as potential danger for passengers and people at the airport. Airline engineers should consider modifying designs for any model with a similar threat.

On the other hand, it is the airport’s responsibility to make sure that objects, such as the baggage container, remain at a safe distance.

The Times writes: “ ... a baggage cart that was either parked or driven too close to the aircraft.”

Why “too close”? Who allowed this? Where was the supervision? What if the cart had contained a bomb?

Real security is so bad at LAX and other airports, large as well as regional, that even as innocent passengers are harassed at check-in, baggage handlers and their carts have nearly unlimited access to the planes that we hope will get us safely to our destinations.
