Los Angeles-based composer and saxophonist Bill Holman was one of seven performers named Thursday to receive the 2010 Jazz Masters Award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The award, to be presented Jan. 12, carries a $25,000 grant.

The other recipients are pianist Muhal Richard Abrams, vocalist Annie Ross, pianist Kenny Barron, vibraphonist and marimba player Bobby Hutcherson, pianist Cedar Walton and Yusef Lateef, a saxophonist, flutist and oboist.

An eighth award went to George Avakian, a jazz producer, manager, critic and educator from Riverdale, N.Y., for jazz advocacy.
