Jerod Turner, a 34-year-old rookie who began the tournament 150th on the Nationwide Tour money list, shot a two-under-par 69 at the Country Club at Soboba Springs in San Jacinto on Sunday to win the $1-million Soboba Classic.

On a windy day when scores were significantly higher than in the third round, Turner’s steady play left him at 15-under 269, two strokes better than third-round co-leader Derek Lamely, who struggled to a 72 after his record 62 Saturday.

Qualifier Tyrone van Aswegen and Brian Stuard tied for third. Rickie Fowler of Murietta, who turned professional two weeks ago, struggled to a 77 to drop from 10th place to 31st.

Turner had missed four consecutive cuts before finishing seventh a week ago in his home state of Texas to earn a trip to the Soboba Classic, the only tour event with a $1-million purse aside from the Tour Championship. He had earned just over $21,000 this year. Sunday’s $180,000 payday put him among the top 25 money winners and in position to get his PGA Tour card next season.
