Oklahoma State’s Bryant is ineligible

All-American wide receiver Dez Bryant has been ruled ineligible by Oklahoma State, four days before the 15th-ranked Cowboys’ first Big 12 Conference game.

The university announced Wednesday that Bryant “failed to openly disclose to the NCAA the full details of his interaction with a former NFL player not affiliated with OSU.” Oklahoma State (3-1) said it had already asked the NCAA to reinstate Bryant for the violation of bylaw 10.1(d), which prohibits players from knowingly providing false information to the NCAA regarding a possible rules violation.

“I made a mistake by not being entirely truthful when meeting with the NCAA,” Bryant said in a statement released by the university. “I sincerely regret my mistake and apologize to my teammates, coaches, OSU fans and the NCAA.”

Bryant caught 87 passes for 1,480 yards and 19 touchdowns last season while also scoring twice on punt returns. He’s the only one of last year’s three finalists for the Biletnikoff Award who is still in school.

This season, Bryant leads the team with 17 catches for 323 yards and four touchdowns. He left Oklahoma State’s 41-24 win against Rice after taking a hard hit and sat out a 56-6 win against Grambling State two weeks ago.

The Cowboys were off last week and open conference play Saturday at Texas A&M; (3-1).

“We are certainly disappointed, but we are moving forward as we would with any challenge during the season,” Coach Mike Gundy said in a statement.

Anger course

Alabama linebacker Courtney Upshaw has been ordered to complete an anger management course to resolve a misdemeanor domestic violence and harassment case. A Tuscaloosa County District Court official said Upshaw, a sophomore, was given until Dec. 9 to complete the course. The court official said the same order was given for Kendall Grzyb, the female student who was involved in the altercation with Upshaw.

Tuel to play

Washington State freshman quarterback Jeff Tuel expects to start Saturday’s game against Arizona State. Tuel was knocked out of last week’s loss to Oregon in the first quarter because of a back injury.

Brigham Young Coach Bronco Mendenhall has kicked sophomore safety Shiloah Te’o off the team for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

Provo (Utah) City Justice Court records show that Te’o was charged Sept. 18 with driving under the influence from an arrest in August.
