This could finally be the Lions’ week

Is this the weekend the Detroit Lions finally win again?

After 19 consecutive defeats, the Lions face a team they appear to match up favorably against -- the 1-1 Washington Redskins, who struggled mightily to beat the St. Louis Rams last Sunday, 9-7.

Former Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann said on Sirius NFL Radio last week that he thinks Washington is ripe for an upset.

“What scares me is going into Detroit,” Theismann said. “I know how tough it is. The one thing that isn’t bad in Detroit is the fans. The football organization [and] the team have not been very good, but the fans are really, really supportive. And I think looking at [the Lions] last week, they’re starting to taste a little bit of blood in the water and they realize that they’re pretty good.”

The fans may be supportive, but they can take only so much. The Lions failed to sell out the game, so the quest for history will be blacked out in the Detroit area.

“And if the Redskins lose this one,” Theismann said, “they might as well not get on the plane until Thursday to come home to Washington.”

Trivia time

What was the Redskins’ original nickname?

One and done

Martina Hingis’ stint as a dance contestant on a British television program was shorter than some of the tennis matches she once played.

Competing on the new BBC reality show “Strictly Come Dancing,” Hingis and her partner, Matthew Cutler, lost a dance-off and became the first couple to be voted off the show.

“It was a great experience,” Hingis said. “I learned so much. I wish it could continue, but here we are. Maybe I will come back for a few more lessons to London.”

Funny, who’s laughing?

So far, this has been a dismal NFL season in the state of Florida, with Tampa Bay, Jacksonville and Miami opening the schedule a combined 0-6.
