Detour for Amgen race

Officials for the Amgen Tour of California said that because of bad road conditions caused by fire, rain and snow, it will not be possible to use the Angeles Crest Highway (California 2) as part of the bicycle race’s Stage 6 route next month.

Said tour director Andrew Messick: “We have been forced to change the route for Stage 6” at the request of Caltrans. “We are working to secure a new stage start.” He said the stage will still finish at Big Bear Lake and will include an uphill portion in the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains.

Sun shining on Charles

Tina Charles, who on Tuesday led the University of Connecticut to its seventh NCAA women’s title, is expected to be the No. 1 pick by the Connecticut Sun in Thursday’s WNBA draft. Sun Coach Mike Thibault has already called her “one of our players.”

The Sparks, who have the eighth and 12th picks in the first round, will be looking for a shooting guard who can take pressure off Candace Parker and someone to replace retired Lisa Leslie. “We definitely have to try to replace [Leslie], but that’s almost impossible,” said Jennifer Gillom, in her first year as head coach of the Sparks.

Freshman All-Americans John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins are among five Kentucky players who have declared for the NBA draft.

Junior forward Patrick Patterson, freshman guard Eric Bledsoe and freshman center Daniel Orton also declared.

Soccer semifinals set

Bayern Munich gave Germany its first European Champions League semifinalist since 2002 and left England with no teams in the final four for the first time since 2003.

A Ivica Olic began the comeback with a goal late in the first half, Arjen Robben scored on a powerful volley in the 74th minute and Bayern Munich advanced over Manchester United despite a 3-2 loss Wednesday night.A Bayern tied the aggregate score in the home-and-home, total-goals series, 4-4. Bayern advanced because of a 2-1 advantage in away goals.

A Bayern will play Lyon, which lost, 1-0, at Bordeaux in a quarterfinal but advanced on a 3-2 aggregate and reached its first Champions League semifinal.

Bayern hosts the first leg April 21.A In the other semifinal, Inter Milan plays Barcelona.

Tennis great Martina Navratilova has been diagnosed with a noninvasive form of breast cancer. Her prognosis is considered excellent.
