Winter storm brings scattered showers, chilly temperatures

Southern California residents can expect scattered showers and chilly weather Wednesday as the remnants of a winter storm linger across the region before giving way to a warmer weekend, forecasters said.

A low-pressure area that dropped rain on Tuesday is expected to produce scattered showers and up to a couple of inches of snow between 3,000 and 4,000 feet in area mountains, according to the National Weather Service.

“Everything is pretty light,” agency weather specialist Bonnie Bartling said of the expected rain and snow.

Temperatures in the coastal areas will reach the low 60s, and mountain areas will see temperatures range from the mid-30s to upper 40s, the weather service said.

Snowfall could affect morning commuters on the Grapevine, Bartling said, adding that the weather service may issue a winter weather advisory Wednesday.

The low-pressure area will move east on Thursday, leading to warmer days beginning Friday and lasting through the weekend.

“The weekend should be pretty nice,” Bartling said.

Areas of Southern California were buffeted Tuesday night by strong winds. Gusts up to 44 mph were recorded at Chilao in the San Gabriel Mountains, the weather service said. At Lake Palmdale, the gusts reached 51 mph.

The warm weather is expected to last through Monday; a weak system will approach from the northwest the following day, according to the weather service.
