Yankees Manager Joe Girardi may be reaching with acquisition of Kerry Wood

Whispers: Joe Girardi must have influenced the Yankees’ addition of Kerry Wood. He caught Wood with the Cubs in 2000-02 but it seems like a reach to expect him to succeed where Joba Chamberlain has failed in consistently getting leads to Mariano Rivera. Wood has been a mess with the Indians … Player most surprisingly not traded: Brett Myers. Astros owner Drayton McLane will never throw in the towel. He sees Myers becoming a replacement for Oswalt but he’s a risky guy to give an extension, and the Astros aren’t going anywhere for at least a couple years … With no money to spend, the Dodgers took the quantity over quality approach, adding Scott Podsednik, Ted Lilly, Ryan Theriot and Octavio Dotel. The Cubs tried unsuccessfully to get the Dodgers to put Homewood-Flossmoor product John Ely in the Ted Lilly deal. It could have been a full circle return for Ely, whom the White Sox traded last winter for Juan Pierre … The best deal of the weekend was the Twins sending catcher Wilson Ramos to Washington for Matt Capps. It could help both teams … The Giants were pleased with adding lefty Javier Lopez but they needed a bat. Every time they went after a big name, the other team asked for Madison Bumgarner, who was unavailable … Not sure why the Phillies didn’t value Happ more highly. He could thrive in Houston but he seemed tough enough to handle the bigger stage in Philadelphia … We’re about to find out if Brett Wallace is worth the fuss. The much traveled minor-leaguer should take over for Berkman as the Astros’ first baseman … When are the A’s going to give Chris Carter a shot? They have no power but stubbornly stick with Daric Barton at first base rather than Carter, a former White Sox prospect with 30-homer power.
