The Tampa Bay Rays put first baseman Carlos Pena on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprain in his right foot.

The move is retroactive to Aug. 1.

Pena is batting .212 with a team-leading 23 home runs and 68 runs batted in in 102 games.

In a corresponding move, the Rays recalled pitcher Dale Thayer from triple-A Durham (N.C.). The right-hander was 2-1 with three saves and a 3.35 earned-run average in 37 games for the Bulls.

Etc.

The Boston Red Sox put pitcher Hideki Okajima on the 15-day DL because of an injured calf just before opening a four-game series with the New York Yankees.

Okajima is 4-3 with a 5.85 ERA in 40 games. The left-hander has given up 49 hits and 15 walks in 32 1/3 innings.

The Red Sox recalled pitcher Felix Doubront from triple-A Pawtucket (R.I.) to fill the roster spot. Doubront started three games for the Red Sox this season, posting a record of 1-2 with a 4.11 ERA.

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Jesse Litsch will have season-ending surgery because of a cartilage tear in his right hip.

The 25-year-old will have surgery sometime next week, and the recovery time is four to six months.

The Florida native has struggled to a 1-5 record with a 5.79 ERA in nine starts after returning from elbow-reconstruction surgery last year.

To fill the roster spot, the Blue Jays will recall pitcher Brad Mills from triple-A Las Vegas to start on Saturday.

The Milwaukee Brewers put center fielder Carlos Gomez on the 15-day DL because of a concussion after he was hit by a pitch in Chicago on Monday night.

The Brewers called up outfield prospect Lorenzo Cain to take Gomez’s spot on the roster and put him in the starting lineup for the first time in his career for Friday night’s game against the Houston Astros.
