Johnny Damon is staying in Detroit

Detroit Tigers outfielder Johnny Damon, 36, Tuesday rejected a waiver claim by the Boston Red Sox.

“These guys really like me here,” Damon said, adding he spoke to each of his teammates individually to be sure he was wanted in the Tigers’ clubhouse.

Damon was popular in Boston when he helped the Red Sox win the 2004 World Series. He fell out of favor, however, with many Red Sox fans when he became a free agent and joined the New York Yankees.

Damon’s contract gives him veto power over trades to several teams, including the Red Sox.

Ordonez to have surgery

Tigers outfielder Magglio Ordonez is scheduled to have season-ending surgery on his right ankle Wednesday.

The 36-year-old slugger, sidelined since July 25, was hitting .303 with 12 home runs and 59 runs batted in before he was injured.

Kinsler is close to returning

Texas Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler ran sprints and took 100 swings in the batting cage after an MRI exam showed significant improvement in his strained left groin that has kept him out of the lineup nearly a month.

Kinsler is hoping to be back in the lineup within a week.

Edmonds to the disabled list

Cincinnati Reds center fielder Jim Edmonds has been put on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained abdominal muscle.

Edmonds was injured during an at-bat in the sixth inning of the Reds’ 11-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Monday night.
