Oakland 4, Angels 2

AT THE PLATE: The Angels were the scourge of the Cactus League last season, batting .315 as a team and averaging 7.4 runs a game, but their offense is off to a slow start this spring, hitting .215 in the first three games. Among their seven hits Saturday were doubles by Terry Evans and Hank Conger and a nice bunt single by leadoff batter Erick Aybar to open the game.

ON THE MOUND: It was a good day by Jered Weaver’s measure. The right-hander allowed two runs on a pair of sacrifice flies and three hits in 1 2/3 rocky innings, but he “came out healthy, and that’s all that matters,” he said. “I was getting back in tune with having an umpire back there, having runners on base, and you can’t work on that in the bullpen. I was getting my timing down, getting back into the flow of the game.”

EXTRA BASES: The most impressive player in Angels camp so far? That would probably be Michael Ryan, the 32-year-old non-roster invitee who is competing for a reserve outfield job. Ryan has two hits in three at-bats, with three runs batted in, in two games, and he made a superb diving catch in left field to rob Daric Barton of a hit in the bottom of the fifth inning Saturday.
