Angels 13, Texas 9

Surprise, Ariz.

AT THE PLATE: An offense that hit .215 in the first three exhibition games broke out for 19 hits, including Mike Napoli’s solo home run to center field in the third inning and Brandon Wood’s two-run shot to right-center in the fifth. Juan Rivera had an RBI single and an RBI double, and Kendry Morales, in his first spring start, hit a pair of RBI singles. Maicer Izturis had two singles, both of which sent leadoff man Erick Aybar from first to third.

ON THE MOUND: Ervin Santana looked sharp in his first spring start, throwing two hitless innings in which his fastball topped out at 94 mph, a good sign for a right-hander who lost considerable velocity while battling an elbow sprain in 2009. Matt Palmer was roughed up for two runs and three hits in two innings, but reliever Jason Bulger threw a scoreless fifth in his first spring appearance.

EXTRA BASES: Wood, who is battling for the third-base job, made a nice backhand, diving stop of Julio Borbon’s grounder in the first inning, got up and threw out the speedy Borbon at first. Right fielder Terry Evans made a nice leaping catch of Vladimir Guerrero’s drive to the wall in the first.

UP NEXT: Joel Pineiro is scheduled to start Tuesday’s noon (PST) game against San Diego in Tempe, Ariz.

ON THE AIR: TV: FS West; Radio: 830 (delayed, 10 p.m.).
