Chicago Cubs 8, Angels 7
Tempe, Ariz.
At the plate: The Angels sent 11 men to the plate in the second inning and scored six runs on six hits off Cubs starter Randy Wells. The big hits were by Kendry Morales, who opened the inning with a solo home run to right field, and Howie Kendrick, who hit a two-run triple to right-center. Hideki Matsui also drove in his first run of the spring with a single.
On the mound: Starter Joel Pineiro gave up four hits in the first inning, including Kevin Millar’s RBI double and Marlon Byrd’s RBI single, and Millar tagged Pineiro for a two-run homer in the third. Prospect Anthony Ortega, who suffered a season-ending elbow injury last May after making two starts for the Angels, allowed one hit — Mike Fontenot’s solo homer — in three innings.
Extra bases: Left fielder Juan Rivera made a strong one-hop throw home to nail Marlon Byrd, who was trying to score from second on Alfonso Soriano’s single in the first inning.
