Needlework

Lisa Borgnes Giramonti has spent the last six months creating 10 embroidery pieces, each 3 feet by 4 feet, all crafted from the discomfort of home.

“I made them all in my living room,” she says. “In the beginning, I was crouched on the floor on my hands and knees, and when that proved ridiculously debilitating, I bought a loom.” When the loom proved “completely devoid of charm,” she turned it into an objet d’art, painting it black and studding it with brass nail heads, “which represents my point of view much more anyway.”

Contemporary art collector and curator Kay Saatchi says Borgnes explores “the values of modern society with great humor and visual impact. I especially like the scale of the work, the coarseness of the burlap and the harsh suture-like marks that make these ‘samplers’ a powerful statement about the expectations of women today.”

Borgnes Giramonti’s work will be on view through May 29 at Acme Gallery, 6150 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles; (323) 857-5942; https://www.acmelosangeles.com.
