Isabel Allende The Chilean author of such works as “The House of Spirits” and “Eva Luna” discusses her new book with novelist and poet Gioconda Belli. “Island Beneath the Sea” is one woman’s journey from turbulent 19th century Haiti to New Orleans, where she tries to forge a new destiny for herself. Ethnola: Revisioning Community and Culture The multicultural tapestry of Los Angeles is the subject of this evening of films by students of the UCLA Center for EthnoCommunications. The retrospective screening’s subjects include a multiethnic skateboard crew in Long Beach, South Asian motel owners and the struggles of the Bus Riders Union. Motorexpo A quick survey of car commercials will show that downtown is no stranger to gleaming automobiles, so it’s a fitting backdrop for the first Los Angeles installment of Motorexpo. The show displays sleek new cars and motorcycles from automakers such as Lamborghini, Jaguar, Lotus and Ducati, all positioned among the fountains and gardens of Bunker Hill. POP MUSIC

The Like Well-connected and well-financed, the Like were the can’t-miss Los Angeles band that missed. The band’s 2005 Geffen release, “Are You Thinking What I’m Thinking?,” with its power-pop gloss and teenage romanticism, left a burned-out trail of hype in its wake. But all of that? Forget it. The Like disappeared, got a makeover and toughened up. Z. Berg’s once potentially cloying vocals today come with a side of scruff, and a new song such as “Fair Game” is 2 1/2 minutes of whiplash bliss.
