Central Florida routs Marshall, 35-14

Ronnie Weaver rushed for a career-high 150 yards, Jeff Godfrey ran for two touchdowns and Central Florida beat Marshall, 35-14, Wednesday night in Huntington, W.Va.

Central Florida, 4-2 overall and 2-0 in Conference USA, broke open a close game in a steady rain with two touchdowns in the span of a minute in the third quarter and Marshall (1-5, 0-2) never recovered.

The nation’s ninth-best defense limited Marshall’s running game to 41 yards. And on a soggy night, two Marshall quarterbacks couldn’t complete enough passes to overcome a big deficit.

The game was stopped for more than an hour in the second quarter because of lightning. Only a few thousand fans returned to their seats when play resumed and halftime was canceled.

Rettig on track to start for Boston College

Freshman Chase Rettig is on track to return as starting quarterback when Boston College plays No. 14 Florida State. Rettig said Wednesday that he’s ready to play. He said he took all the snaps he needed at Tuesday’s practice and his ankle feels good.

Rettig was named the starter for the Oct. 2 game against Notre Dame, but he sprained his left ankle in the second quarter. Mike Marscovetra relieved him, but he was ineffective and the Eagles went back to starter Dave Shinskie for last week’s game against North Carolina State.

Georgia gets a new dog

After playing its first six games with an interim mascot, Georgia will introduce Uga VIII before Saturday’s homecoming game against Vanderbilt.

Georgia has had “Russ” as the interim mascot since Uga VII’s death last year.

Uga VIII’s registered name is “Big Bad Bruce” in honor of Dr. Bruce Hollett of the university’s school of veterinary medicine. Hollett has helped in the care and treatment of the line of white English bulldog mascots owned by members of Savannah-based Sonny Seiler’s family.

McCoy’s number to be retired

Texas will retire the No. 12 worn by former quarterback Colt McCoy.

McCoy, who may get his first NFL start this week with the Cleveland Browns, won an NCAA record 45 games as a starter for the Longhorns from 2006 to 2009. He was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2008 and last year led Texas to the Big 12 title and a berth in the national championship game.
