Serena Williams is finished for the season

Serena Williams is done for the season, just like her sister.

In a statement e-mailed to the Associated Press by her agent, the younger Williams said she “re-tore the tendon” in her right foot, which she originally injured by cutting it on glass at a restaurant shortly after winning Wimbledon in July.

Williams had surgery in New York on Monday; she first had the foot repaired July 15.

Her announcement comes less than two weeks after Venus Williams said she wouldn’t play for the rest of the year because of an injury to her left knee. Both sisters will miss the WTA Championships next week in Doha, Qatar.

Vizio will sponsor Rose Bowl games

The Rose Bowl game has a new presenting sponsor: Vizio Inc.

In a sponsorship deal that runs from 2011 to 2014, the game will be known as the Rose Bowl Game presented by Vizio.

The deal, which will be announced officially Wednesday, also includes the sponsorship of the 2014 BCS championship game, which will be held at the Rose Bowl and known as the 2014 Vizio BCS National Championship Game.

“The Rose Bowl game by itself is an incredible pull,” said Randy Waynick, chief sales officer of the Irvine-based HDTV and consumer electronics company. “The fact that it’s going to be the BCS game is icing on the cake.”

With ESPN taking over coverage rights of the BCS series, all title sponsorships were up for renewal. Citi declined to continue the presenting sponsorship it has held since 2004.

And leading receiver Michael Floyd will probably not practice this week. His status will be a game-time decision.

Toms takes lead in PGA Grand Slam

David Toms got off to a fast start in the first round of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf at Southampton, Bermuda, before losing momentum with a pair of bogeys. He managed a four-under-par 67 at Port Royal Golf Course for a one-shot lead over Ernie Els.

U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell had a 72 and PGA champion Martin Kaymer had a 74.

The 36-hole event is for the four major champions. Toms replaced British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen, who is recovering from an ankle injury. Els filled in for Masters champion Phil Mickelson, who chose not to play.
