Kevin Prince to have knee surgery Saturday

Reporting from Eugene, Ore.

UCLA quarterback Kevin Prince will have arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Saturday to determine the source of the pain and swelling that has plagued him since he was injured against Texas on Sept. 25.

A UCLA official said that the knee would be “cleaned out,” but said there was no way to determine a timetable for Prince’s returned until after the surgery.

Richard Brehaut started at quarterback for against Oregon on Thursday night.

Prince underwent two MRI exams and practiced little this week. He sat out the Washington State game a week after being injured, then started against California on Oct. 9. He completed only 13 of 31 passes for 99 yards against the Bears in the 35-7 loss.

Good deal for UCLA

The Pacific 10 Conference’s realignment, with the addition of Colorado and Utah next fall, worked out well for UCLA, and USC.

Despite being in separate divisions, UCLA and USC will continue to play California and Stanford on a yearly basis. UCLA and USC will also receive an extra $2 million if conference revenues are below $170-million.

“It was a big day for the Pac-12,” UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero said. “A lot of work has gone into the formation of the new configuration.

“It was a big day for us. The opportunity to have what’s called a five-two-two model, allowing us to preserve the tradition with California and Stanford is great for us.”

Guerrero said that was “something we felt strongly about.”

As for the extra revenue, Guerrero said, “We’re very grateful that the conference recognizes the value of the Los Angeles schools and the Southern California market. We conveyed that throughout the entire process.”

As for the concerns other conference schools might have about UCLA and USC receiving a bigger piece of the pie, Guerrero said, “The feeling has always been that at some point, when the conference hits the mother lode, if you will, and is able to attain a blockbuster status in our television deal, that we would move equal revenue sharing.”

Rick Who?

UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel slipped into Eugene with causing a stir. Honest.

Two years ago, UCLA came to Oregon to find Ducks Nation waiting for Neuheisel, whose popularity in Eugene ranked right up there with Adidas. Vendors were even selling “Neuheisel [stinks]” T-shirts.

But Ducks fans apparently have other things on their mind, having the top-ranked team in the nation and all. Even the boat dealership near Autzen Stadium, which carried a dig at Neuheisel every time he came to town with Washington and UCLA, was silent.

In 2008, the marquee at Staff Jennings Boating Centers said, “Neuheisel has nothing Bruin at UCLA.” On Thursday, the sign said, “The future home of BMW Eugene.”
