Maryland holds off Navy, 17-14

Kenny Tate stopped Ricky Dobbs at the goal line with 34 seconds left, and Maryland stunned in-state rival Navy, 17-14, on Monday at Baltimore to break a seven-game losing streak that began last October.

The Midshipmen (0-1) held the ball for nearly 19 minutes longer than Maryland (0-1) and outgained the Terrapins by more than 200 yards. But in a game influenced by untimely turnovers and huge penalties, the outcome was decided on a gritty goal-line stand.

Trailing 17-14 with a fourth down at the one, Navy decided to go for the win. Dobbs took the snap, went to his left and was met by Tate, who would not relent to the momentum Dobbs brought to the line.

Earlier in the drive, Dobbs was stopped on a third-and-eight. But Maryland’s Adrian Moten was flagged for grabbing the facemask on the play, and the Midshipmen advanced until Tate’s big play.

Coming off a 2-10 season, the Terrapins came in as underdogs against a Navy team that went 10-4 and beat Missouri in the Texas Bowl.

But Maryland jumped to 14-0 lead in the first quarter and never trailed despite allowing the Midshipmen to amass 485 yards in offense.

Dobbs ran for 63 yards and a touchdown, but the senior quarterback fumbled three times — losing two of them at the Maryland one.

Wyoming player dies in crash

A Wyoming player was killed and three teammates were injured when a pickup drifted off a Colorado highway and crashed Monday, authorities said.

Ruben Narcisse, 19, of Miami was killed, the Colorado State Patrol said.

Trey Fox, 19, of Glenwood Springs, Colo., Christian Morgan, 18, of Aurora, Colo., and J.J. Quinlan, 19, of Everett, Wash., were injured and were taken to hospitals in Laramie, Wyo., and Loveland, Colo.

Morgan’s injuries were serious but were not believed to be life-threatening, troopers said. Fox had moderate injuries.

The nature and extent of Quinlan’s injuries weren’t known.

Fox was driving and apparently fell asleep, investigators said. They said alcohol and drugs aren’t believed to be factors.

No. 1 Alabama won’t appeal defensive end Marcell Dareus’ two-game suspension to the NCAA.

Coach Nick Saban said “that issue is dead.” He says there isn’t enough precedent in similar cases to warrant an appeal.

He had indicated late last week that the school would try to get Dareus’ suspension cut to one game, allowing him to return for Saturday’s visit from No. 19 Penn State.

Vidal Hazelton tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Cincinnati’s season opener at Fresno State, costing the Bearcats one of their top receivers.

Tests on Monday detected the tear. The senior transfer from USC will have surgery and miss the rest of the season.
