Bud Selig won’t expand use of instant replay for postseason

Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig on Monday ruled out increased use of instant replay by umpires to review close calls during the postseason this season.

Selig said he discussed the matter with the special committee of managers, management and ownership he appointed in December.

“I brought the subject up, as I always do with everybody,” Selig said. “I don’t get the feeling that there’s a lot of support for it, at least their conversations with me.”

Baseball instituted video review to assist umpires late in the 2008 season, but limited its use to whether potential home runs are fair and whether the ball went over the fence.

Chicago Cubs outfielder Tyler Colvin remained hospitalized in Miami, a day after his season ended when part of a shattered bat wound up puncturing his chest.

Colvin was standing at third base in the second inning of Chicago’s 13-3 victory at Florida on Sunday when he was struck by a sliver of Welington Castillo’s broken bat. Castillo doubled on the play and Colvin scored.

A Cubs trainer said Colvin was hit in his upper chest, allowing air into his chest well and potentially into his lungs.

He was being treated with a chest tube to prevent a collapsed lung and was expected to remain hospitalized for a few more days.

ETC.Drury to miss four weeks

New York Rangers captain Chris Drury is out for four weeks because of a broken left index finger.

The 34-year-old center was injured while blocking a shot Monday during a scrimmage. Drury probably will be sidelined the entire preseason and for at least the regular-season opener at Buffalo on Oct. 9.

Kings goaltender Erik Ersberg, who is competing with Jonathan Bernier for the backup spot behind Jonathan Quick, left the ice before the end of Monday’s practice because of a bruised left hand.

Coach Terry Murray told reporters that Ersberg had taken a shot to his catching hand Sunday. “He was just feeling some pain,” Murray said. “Hopefully he’s able to get back on the ice” Tuesday.

Atlanta Thrashers prospect Patrice Cormier has pleaded not guilty to an assault charge stemming from an elbow thrown during a Quebec junior hockey league game last season.

Cormier was playing for the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies last January when he dropped Quebec Remparts defenseman Mikael Tam with a blow to the head. He was charged with assault causing injury.

Thierry Henry has been fined $2,000 by Major League Soccer for a celebratory kick last week that injured Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman.

Following a goal by New York Red Bulls teammate Mehdi Ballouchy in Thursday’s 2-2 tie, Henry kicked the ball toward the net. The ball struck Hartman on the right knee, injuring his medial collateral ligament.

Toronto Raptors rookie forward Ed Davis underwent knee surgery and will be sidelined about six weeks.
