Golden Road’s new destinations

It took all of eight months for Atwater Village’s Golden Road Brewing to become a dominating force on the L.A. beer scene. Spearheaded by Tony Yanow of Tony’s Darts Away and Mohawk Bend, the brewery’s Point the Way IPA and namesake Hefeweizen can regularly be spotted everywhere from Pasadena to Venice, and this month Golden Road officially opened a railroad-adjacent pub on its three-warehouse campus.

Now the fun starts. “Regardless of the fact that we brew at a significant rate, we haven’t really branched out,” said head brewer Jon Carpenter.

That will be changing -- and fast. Among the beers revealed at Golden Road’s recent opening party were Get Up Offa That Brown and Either Side of the Hill, the former a traditional brown ale and the latter an experimental take on a pale ale. Capacities, of course, are limited.

“We’re allocating beer based on our first customers and bars who have supported us and can come and pick up things,” co-founder Meg Gill said. “Places like 38 Degrees and Larry’s in Venice.”

For the James Brown-referencing Get Up Offa That Brown, Carpenter said he wanted to tackle a style that would challenge himself, because browns are not in vogue in the same way IPAs are. Carpenter said it’s a more traditional English-style brown, emphasizing sweetness and a smoked malt flavoring that becomes apparent as the beer warms.

Either Side of the Hill is harder to describe, even for the brewer. “We wanted to make something was like a pale ale, but blend it with more radical techniques,” Carpenter said. “It has higher alcohol and heavier hops.” The 8% alcohol hits like a barley wine, but it becomes a softer, easier-to-drink beer as it warms. “It’s fun to make something that’s good but can’t even be explained,” he said.

Hollywood’s Blue Palms Brewhouse, inside the Henry Fonda Theater, has been operating in a stage of uncertainty as the owners of its lease, the Music Box concert venue, were evicted. The restaurant/bar hopes to work out a permanent solution with the owners of the property and in the meantime has been living week to week. Blue Palms will be operating through at least Feb. 1, when Golden Road plans to bring its batch of Hefeweizen aged in tequila barrels to the bar. Yes, aged in tequila barrels.

Eagle Rock Brewery will celebrate its second anniversary with an afternoon event Jan. 28 at the brewer’s Glassell Park headquarters. Food trucks, a commemorative glass and nearly all of Eagle Rock’s limited-release beers will be available.
