Reid’s son died of heroin overdose

An accidental heroin overdose killed Garrett Reid, the son of Philadelphia Eagles Coach Andy Reid, a coroner said Thursday.

Northampton County (Pa.) Coroner Zachary Lysek said a toxicology test confirmed the presence of heroin in Garrett Reid’s body.

Investigators revealed they found a used syringe and spoon in his room, along with a gym bag filled with dozens of syringes and needles, many of them unopened.

“We are confident today that Mr. Reid’s death was the result of a self-injected lethal dose of heroin,” Dist. Atty. John Morganelli said at a news conference in Easton, Pa.

Reid was found dead in his dorm room early on Aug. 5 at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, where he was assisting the team’s strength and conditioning coach during training camp.

He was a recovering drug addict who had seemingly turned his life around. His father had indicated that his 29-year-old son may have had a relapse.

“These results sadly confirmed what we had expected all along,” the Reid family said in a statement. “We understood that Garrett’s long-standing battle with addiction was going to be difficult. He will, however, always have our family’s love and respect for the courage he showed in trying to overcome it.

“In the end, we take comfort in our faith and know that he’s in a better place.”

Suggs to play?

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs hasn’t ruled out the possibility of making his season debut Sunday against the Houston Texans.

“There’s no plan in place,” Suggs said Thursday. “I’ve got to take it day by day. Come Sunday I may or may not be out there.”

The notion of Suggs playing in Houston seems far-fetched, given that he practiced for the first time Wednesday after undergoing surgery in May on his torn right Achilles’ tendon.

Suggs, 30, was the NFL’s defensive player of the year last season.

Buffalo Bills starting right guard Kraig Urbik will miss his third straight game because of a right ankle injury. Coach Chan Gailey ruled out Urbik from playing against Tennessee this weekend after the player was unable to practice Thursday. ... Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger left practice after turning his right ankle but expects to play Sunday against Cincinnati.

Carolina Panthers three-time Pro Bowler Jon Beason missed his second straight day of practice because of ongoing knee problems, increasing the likelihood rookie Luke Kuechly will make his second start at middle linebacker against the Dallas Cowboys.
