Neil Patrick Harris’ book cover revealed

Neil Patrick Harris’ memoir is coming October 14, and his publisher, Crown Archetype, shared the book cover with us. Children of the ‘80s and ‘90s will know it instantly: It looks like the Choose Your Own Adventure books.

And that’s the title: “Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography.” Promising to be part real-life events along with a path or two not taken, the memoir is constructed like a Choose Your Own Adventure book, with choices at the ends of chapters that prompt the reader to skip ahead to certain pages. There will also be things that didn’t appear in the YA classics, like cocktail recipes and a closing song.

Harris won a Tony for his performance in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” earlier this year. He was a star of “How I Met Your Mother,” “Doogie Howser, MD,” and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, the Web miniseries created by Joss Whedon.

This weekend, Harris and his partner David Burtka were married in Italy. They’ve been engaged since 2011, when New York legalized gay marriage.

Here’s the official description of Harris’ upcoming book: “actor/personality/carbon-based life-form Neil Patrick Harris lets you, the reader, live his life. You will be born in New Mexico. You will get your big break at an acting camp. You will get into a bizarre confrontation outside a nightclub with actor Scott Caan. Even better, at each critical juncture of your life you will choose how to proceed. You will decide whether to try out for Doogie Howser, M.D. You will decide whether to spend years struggling with your sexuality. You will decide what kind of caviar you want to eat onboard Elton John’s yacht.”

Sounds good -- but there’s no adventure without risk. The description continues: “Choose correctly and you’ll find fame, fortune, and true love. Choose incorrectly and you’ll find misery, heartbreak, and a guest stint on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew Pinsky.”
