Google teams up with HP to offer lightweight, $279 Chromebook laptop

Google and HP introduced the Chromebook 11 on Tuesday. The $279 laptop runs Google’s Chrome OS platform.

Google has revamped its Chromebook laptop lineup in preparation for the holiday shopping season.

The $279.99 HP Chromebook 11 is a light device designed to be portable and easy to carry around. The laptop weighs 2.3 pounds and gets six hours of battery life. It can also be charged using any micro-USB cable,  the same type used to charge Android smartphones and tablets.

The new Google laptop also uses an 11.6-inch 720p HD screen. HP and Google boast about the screen’s 176-degree viewing angle

“Often when folks gather around a screen, everyone tries to gently nudge the computer in their own direction so they can see better,” Google said in a blog announcing the computer. “No more nudging. The new Chromebook’s screen has a 176-degree viewing angle so you can see even when looking at it almost completely sideways.”

Besides specs, Google and HP have also thrown in extra offers that consumers might like. The device gives users 100 GB of cloud storage with Google for two years as well as a 60-day free trial to try Google Play Music All Access, which  works much like Spotify. Additionally, users get 12 sessions of GoGo Inflight Internet for when they fly.

Google said the laptop will come in a variety of colors, including blue, green, yellow and red. The Chromebook 11 goes on sale starting Tuesday and can be purchased from Best Buy, Amazon, Google Play and HP Shopping. An LTE-compatible version of the laptop will be available later this year.

HP is also selling a larger version of the device, the Chromebook 14, for $299.99. It will go on sale through select retailers this week.
