This is the latest list of L.A. County communities with coronavirus cases

It was another challenging day for Los Angeles County and its fight against the coronavirus.

Health officials Thursday confirmed 25 new coronavirus-linked deaths, bringing the county’s death toll to 223. In the last two days alone, 54 people have died in the county.

Among the latest victims, 16 people who died were older than 65 and seven were between the ages of 41 and 65. Details about the two other deaths were not immediately known.

California has seen a string of days with high fatality numbers from COVID-19 even as officials voice guarded optimism that the outbreak is easing.

The total number of people in L.A. County testing positive for the virus has reached 7,955, an increase of 1,045 over just two days. The virus’ mortality rate — the percentage of infected persons who die — in the county is 2.8%, according to Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer.

“Although our case numbers continue to rise along with the number of people who have died, the effectiveness of our collective effort to slow the spread are apparent,” she said in a statement. “These actions, although immensely disruptive as they are, are very powerful in helping to prevent infections, and we need to keep up this difficult work to slow the spread of COVID-19 for the next few weeks.”
