‘Gangnam Style’ video from Anish Kapoor has human-rights theme
Sculptor Anish Kapoor has released his “Gangnam Style” video, a human-rights themed take on the popular music video by South Korean pop star Psy. The video features cameo appearances by museum staff across the world, including staff from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Kapoor, who was born in India and lives in London, has said the video is intended to be a tribute to Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, who created his own “Gangnam Style” video last month, and other activists who have fought for political rights.
Kapoor’s video contains references to the Pussy Riot group from Russia; Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, the Bahrani human-rights activist; and Tan Zuoren, the imprisoned Chinese activist. The video also makes reference to a number of journalists who have been killed reporting human-rights stories around the world.
In addition to LACMA, museums making cameo appearances in the video include the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.
